Children's Book - Bad Days Don't Last Forever
Time
The illustration took part over 5 months, between March and August of 2021. Most of the work was done over the summer, with weekly reviews and constant communication to make sure we were all on the same page. At one point, to stay on schedule, I was working at a rate of one page a week.
Role
Using provided visual references, my job was to design all the characters, settings, props, and scene layouts, constantly communicating with my team to make sure it was accurate to rural Ethiopia. I thumbnailed, sketched, lined, colored, and rendered all of the pages, checking in at each step of the way.
Organization
In the spring of 2021, my friend Carolee McCarty approached me with an opportunity: to illustrate a children's book as a part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, to be distributed in Ethiopia as a way to promote literacy. So I joined Open Hearts Big Dreams' Ready Set Go Books program as a volunteer illustrator and proceeded to spend the next several months working closely with Carolee and Jane Kurtz to make an expressive and culturally accurate picture book, now published as Bad Days Don't Last Forever.
